Therapeutic ultrasound frequency ranges from 1-3 MHz. The higher the frequency, the less effective the ultrasound is. Ergo, 2 is stronger than 5. we use 1.1 MHz reaching 2.3 cm deep.

As the ultrasound waves pass from the treatment head to the skin they cause a vibration of the surrounding tissues – this is called a cascade of intercellular communication. Happily for those of us seeking firmer skin, this mechanism is particularly effective on cells that contain collagen. You will not actually feel these vibrations on the surface of the skin and the device will not feel hot against the skin. How does Radio Frequency (RF) Ultrasonic Facial work? The radio frequency energy penetrates the skin layers to selectively heat the skin tissue where the collagen fibers are embedded. The local heating causes an immediate contraction of the collagen fibers. Fat cells drain, then shrink, while those all important fibroblast cells (part of our connective tissue), are stimulated to produce new collagen and elastic fibers. The effect is tighter, smoother, younger looking skin with a visible ‘lift’.

What is the treatment like? The treatment itself is surprisingly relaxing. Application of cosmetic gel and warming wand is passed over the skin. The wand gently heats the lower levels of the skin to approximately 40°c; this tricks the brain into thinking there has been a potential injury and stimulates a healing response. This in turn causes increased collagen production and tightening of elastin fibers. Radio Frequency will be applied for the first 30 minutes followed by 30 minutes ultrasonic. A heat sensation can be felt during treatment (sometimes compared to a sunburn), and you may feel some discomfort. A topical anesthetic is generally used prior to treatment to increase comfort. 

When can I expect to see results? The tightening of elastin fibers is instant meaning the skin appears tighter and lifted from the first treatment. Most patients will be able to notice immediate results in the tightness of their skin. More results continue to emerge in the days following the treatment. Skin is remarkably smoother and muscle tone is more visible too. Normally, multiple sessions are required. Usually, 1 per week until you’ve had about 4-8 treatments in total.

Are there any side effects? You can expect some occasional redness that is usually gone within 30 minutes post-treatment.

A course of 6 to 8 treatments is recommended for optimum results. Ideally this should be 2 treatments per week for 3 to 4 weeks. After completion of your course it is recommended to have a maintenance session every 4-6 weeks. You will see continued results for up to 3 months after the treatment course has ended. This is perfectly normal as it can take the collagen time to reproduce.
